We’ve all been rejected at one time or another, and we all know it can be very painful. It’s easy to be discouraged by the criticism of others. Here are some examples of famous people who were rejected, and then went on to achieve amazing things…Andy Warhol tried to donate one of his drawings to the Museum of Modern Art back in 1956. After careful consideration, the museum decided “they ought not accept it for our Collection.” The museum now owns 168 Warhol pieces.

Producer Jimmy Ienner felt Madonna was not ready for a music career.

RSO Records found U2 (and its frontman Mr. P. Hewson aka Bono) “not suitable for us to present” in 1979.

Lee did eventually resubmit and started his stellar career with Marvel Comics.

William Golding “Lord of the Flies” was rejected by 20 publishers. One claimed it was “an absurd and uninteresting fantasy which was rubbish and dull.”

Stieg Larson, best-selling author of The Millennium Trilogy, was rejected by a journalism graduate program in Stockholm.

One rejection letter he received read “We are not interested in science fiction which deals with negative utopias. They do not sell.”

While still in high school, Burton submitted his book, “The Giant Zlig,” to Walt Disney Productions; however, they found it “too derivative of the Seuss works to be marketable.” After graduating, the company brought Burton on as an animator’s apprentice.

Fred Astaire’s first screen test for MGM ended in rejection. The testing director noted, “Can’t act. Can’t sing. Slightly bald. Can dance a little.” Astaire went on to become an incredibly successful singer, dancer, and actor. He kept that note to remind him of where he came from. He was named the fifth Greatest Male Star of All Time by the American Film Institute.

Steven Spielberg was rejected by the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts multiple times. His movies have grossed more than $9 billion, and Spielberg is worth several billion himself.
