Firefighters are a tight knit group, they are there for each other in the good and the bad times. Even when one of their men and women have passed away, these courageous people never forget them or their family members. After all, it is the spouses, children, and parents who have to be just as brave to let their loved one go to work and save lives, not knowing if they will make it back. That is why when Jeanette Carty turned 100 years old on June 22, the Norfolk Fire-Rescue in Virginia showed up at her doorstep to wish her a happy birthday. Carty’s late husband Joe was a firefighter for the city for 30 years when he started his career there in 1942. Her nephew and his dad also served in the Norfolk Fire-Rescue. Carty admits to worrying about the dangers that came with the job for Joe. She learned to get used to it with time. She lives in the same home she lived with Joe and raised their children together.
