Quotation marks are used for spoken and written language: dialogue, stories, and poems, for example. We often use them to credit history’s greatest game changers. We reserve them for Winston Churchill, Maya Angelou, Dr. Seuss, and religious passages, among many others. Some people, however, think so highly of themselves that they have taken the liberty to use, misuse, and overuse the marks on their own words. These people are not telling stories or quoting anything. Though many of them may have had clear goals in the beginning – from making a simple announcement to launching a brand new marketing campaign – they’ve gone onto new territory now. “Nice try,” guys. Capitalization or a different color would’ve been more appropriate, but it’s too late now.
