Stan Beaton lost his wife Ruby to stomach cancer when she was only 63 years old. One of the most precious remnants he had of her was an automatic voicemail message she created for their cellphone. He kept it for 14 years and refused to change cellphone carriers because he didn’t want to lose the sound of her voice. “In the early days [I listened to it] quite often. Basically, it came to the point when if I felt low then I would listen to it.” Then it came time for Beaton to upgrade his phone, and even though he was promised the voicemail would stay on his phone, it vanished without warning. “In December I learned that it had disappeared. I just could not tell people how it affected me at that time. It really did devastate me.” When Virgin Media learned about the man’s devastation, they assembled a team of 10 engineers to search for the voicemail.
