Body jewelry has been a long-standing trend throughout the years. Numerous people have pierced various parts of their body so they can stick jewelry into them, such as the ears, the nose, lips, and other unconventional areas. With that said, the person getting pierced is typically the person who decides to get the piercing. However, that’s not always the case. Although she certainly wasn’t the first person to ever do so, one particular mother took her baby girl to go get her ears pierced. She had the entire process filmed and posted online. The video, however, instantly became controversial and attracted a lot of negative feedback.It has become a controversial topic and ignited a heated online debate of whether or not it’s considered “child abuse.”
In the video, the toddler is seen sitting on her mother’s lap in a piercing shop while the two employees were prepping everything for the procedure.
However, the baby was in incredible pain and shock in a matter of minutes.
And although she didn’t know it, the salon workers were placing marker dots on her ears in preparation for the piercing gun.
As the procedure takes place, it becomes clear that the toddler is becoming increasingly distressed.
After a second of shock, the startled baby began crying out of pain while her mother and the piercing employees attempted to comfort her.
It originally surfaced on the Piercings Facebook page earlier this month and has generated over 3.6 million views.
So far, more than 12,000 people have commented on the video on Facebook. Many are repulsed by the video while some have chimed in, in the mother’s defense.
“Why would you do that! Poor baby was panting she was already stressed…abuse it shouldn’t be allowed!!!!”
“I walked out of somewhere that was preparing to pierce a baby’s ears… She could only have been weeks old… I could hear her piercing screams from other end of the precinct.”
Nonetheless, there were some commenters who disagreed and jumped in to defend the mother.
“Next thing we are going to call giving them a shot child abuse its the same concept except pierced ears might not give you autism lol.”
“Ummm you all know people have been doing this for a really long time now right? Just saying, this isn’t exactly breaking news to all of you who are so outraged.”
“People are more mad at piercing a baby’s ears, an impermanent and ultimately harmless procedure, than they are about mutilating baby boy’s genitals, a permanent and proven to be extremely harmful procedure,” said one Facebook user.
If the person getting pierced is underage, all the person needs is his or her parent’s or guardian’s consent. Therefore, everything that happened in the video is legal.
Is putting the baby through a few minutes of pain and stress just to place some jewelry on the ears morally wrong?
Nonetheless, there has been a petition over the last two years calling on the Minister of Children, Edward Timpson, to ban ear piercings for babies.
“Severe pain and fear is inflicted upon infants unnecessarily. It serves no purpose other than to satisfy the parent’s vanity.”
