There have been plenty of accusations from liberals who say that Rep. Ilhan Omar is only being criticized because of her ethnic background. This week, proof of that not being the case came out in an op-ed written by Dr. Qanta Ahmed.
According to the Op-Ed, which was released by Fox News, Dr. Ahmed said that: “Ilhan Omar is a disgrace to Islam and doesn’t represent my Muslim religion.” She continued by saying that “Omar continues to be an embarrassment and a disgrace for me and other American Muslims with her outrageous, ignorant, anti-Semitic and now anti-American comments.”
In her piece, Ahmed made reference to several statements that were ignorantly made by Omar. The most recent of offensive statements was Omar’s description of the 9/11 terrorists as “some people (who) did something.”
Dr. Ahmed not only criticized Omar for being ignorant, but she also called her out for blatantly downplaying the terrorist attack on September 11. She also pointed out the link that the terrorist attack had to be radical Islamists.
“Omar’s grotesque trivialization of a national tragedy amounts to an explicit denial of 9/11 — a desecration of all the lives erased that awful day. This denial is inexplicable unless she has strong and covert Islamist sympathies,” she wrote.
Dr. Ahmed, who continuously sees the impact that the terrorist attack had on the people of New York, explained that she was personally insulted by Omar’s trivialization. “I see the burden of Sept. 11 on a regular basis, treating brave and selfless first responders who still suffer from complex sleep disorders — including post-traumatic stress — that I specialize in treating,” Dr. Ahmed explained.
Dr. Ahmed continued by saying: “In her dismissal of Sept. 11, Omar callously erased the deep suffering of every survivor and family I attend, and everyone else still impacted by the terrorist attacks.”
Dr. Ahmed went on to point out that people like Omar tend to fail at using their Islamic background to gain sympathy for being a victim. “The greatest obscenity in the lie that Omar pedals is that she — along with millions of other Muslims in America — is somehow victimized. Do not believe this,” she wrote.
Needless to say, there are two major things that could be happening right now. The first being that Dr. Qanta Ahmed is right in pointing out that it is wrong for any American to downplay the events of September 11, but it’s especially wrong when an elected official is guilty of doing so.
The second thing that can be seen is the direction that the left is heading. It’s painfully clear that their elected officials are playing with fire, but the fact that they won’t denounce Omar’s comments is unbelievable. The Democrats need to be careful in the upcoming months on who they allow to speak for them, or they could lose a lot of voters when they need them the most.
