French photographer Romain Laurent admits he has strange ideas. Instead of ignoring his thoughts, he brings them to life in mind-bending GIFs. Based in New York, Laurent does not create a full animated portrait. He focuses on one particular area of the image, whether it’s hair blowing in the breeze or hands playing Patty Cake. Laurent’s models are mostly his friends but he also asks strangers in his neighbourhood to participate. The shutterbug encourages his subjects to contribute their own ideas. He began his loop animation series as a way to de-stress from his commercial work. “There isn’t a common concept between each loop, I just ‘go with the flow’ and see what comes to my mind each week,” says Laurent. The Frenchman appreciates this medium as it allows him the freedom to be spontaneous and silly. He has found when he is playful, he creates his best work.
