As it turns out, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez would be the Democrat’s best choice for getting President Trump out of the White House, but she’s not even eligible to run. According to Frank Luntz, who appeared on Fox News’ “The Ingraham Angle,” Ocasio-Cortez has a “genuine” quality that most of the other Democratic candidates seem to be lacking.
During the interview, Luntz said: “The key is authenticity. You want to be able to say what you mean, mean what you say. You want to be able to look straight at the camera and be yourself. At least half of them [the 2020 hopefuls] are trying to be something that they’re not.” But according to the U.S. Constitution, Ocasio-Cortez isn’t able to run for president next year because she isn’t 35 years old yet.
As for those who are eligible to run, Luntz stated that the decision former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke made to “reset” his campaign this week wasn’t necessarily the best move for him to make to stand out against the other Democrats running. According to Luntz, resetting is “the dumbest thing you could possibly do because then it’s acknowledging that your politics doesn’t work.”
Luntz continued by saying: “The problem is you get 19 candidates, so you get to splash for 24 hours after you announce, you say something stupid a week later and you get more focus. The only one that’s had attention is Joe Biden and it hasn’t been good attention.”
Coming after Cory Booker and Kamala Harris, O’Rourke was the third Democratic high-profile candidate to announce that they were “resetting” their campaign. Luntz believes that if he wants to connect with the American people it would be best for O’Rourke to “get off the table” and lose the gimmicks.
“All of Beto was about him. It wasn’t about policy, it wasn’t about politics. It was a call to personality. You don’t do well in a Democratic primary if that’s all you’re about,” said Luntz.
On Tuesday evening, President Trump took to the stage in a campaign-style rally in Hackberry, LA. “If I’m a Democrat, I want him to attack me because I want to run a campaign against him as a Democrat,” said Luntz.
Luntz then explained that even though Trump is working “to entertain conservatives,” one or two of the 2020 candidates could use his language to assert themselves as the Democrat who hates Trump the most. “If I can get 30 seconds of him attacking me then I’m going to use that as an ad and I’m going to be the candidate that Donald Trump doesn’t like.”
Luntz looked at Ocasio-Cortez as the perfect example of an authentic person within her base. Ingraham commented that Ocasio-Cortez connects with anyone, regardless if they support her or not.
In conclusion, Luntz said: “No one is having a better time at politics than Donald Trump and AOC. They should run against each other even though legally she can’t.”
