In 1996 when [Mariam Fatima Paré](http://www.mariampare.com/) was 20 years old, she was preparing to pursue her dream of a career in art. While waiting at a red light, she fell victim to a stray bullet as a fight broke out nearby. She was paralyzed from the neck down almost instantly. Paré thought her dream was over. Mariam had a long period of rehabilitation. It took months and years of slowly relearning to do everyday activities. While learning to use her mouth to hold a pencil to sign her name, it occurred to Paré that she could do the same with her paintbrush.
Paré shares her experience and message of determination with others through public speaking. You can see more of her art and learn more on her [website](http://www.mariampare.com/) and on [Facebook](https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mariam-Par%C3%A9-Art-and-Design/147386811968716).
