Not everyone is an animal lover and that’s totally ok. What is not acceptable is going from not wanting to have pets in ones’ home to actually taking the time and effort to hurt a creature. Cruelty against animals have made countries around the world spring into action and apply laws that prohibit such barbaric and inhumane behaviours. Furthermore, people who regret adopting an animal or find the task too daunting always have the option to give them up for adoption where they can find families who will truly love and take care of the animal. It may not be a matter of caring for a pet being overwhelming but rather a sick joy of bringing pain and suffering to vulnerable animals. Luckily, there are good samaritans who happen to be in the right place, at the right time. Guardian angels disguised as regular folks.He came across a dog buried in dirt. “Only her head was visible and it was difficult to see given the amount of earth covering her,” Dinis wrote on his Facebook page.
He realized the animal had been put there with a rope tied to its neck. This dispelled the thought that it fallen there by accident or it was buried thinking the animal was dead.
Dinis and his own dog worked together to get the mastiff out. After further digging, they found the rope tied to a sack filled with gravel.
When Dinis got Athena out, she was “shocked and dehydrated.” He gave her his own water bottle to drink from.
Dinis was so appalled at what he saw done to Athena that he had to take photos and share them on Facebook.
Athena was taken into the nearest veterinary clinic. Authorities are not sure how long she was buried but believe based on her state of stress, it must have been several hours.
The 21-year-old was taken into custody where he said Athena had run away on her own. Authorities did not buy his story since the mastiff is more than 10 years old and suffers from arthritis.
Still, French residents do not believe the punishment fits the crime. A petition asking for a stronger sentence has garnered over 320,000 signatures.
French couple Jean-Pierre and Raymonde Delfosse adopted Athena after hearing her heart-wrenching story. They run a dog rescue group SOS Dogue de Bordeaux in France, where Athena gets to hang out and play with other dogs.
