Each and every one of us is fighting our own battles, with most of them being inner conflicts that nobody else can win for us. The only way we could be helpful to each other is by collectively getting rid of prejudice. Despite our world getting scarier, and more violent, it’s unfair to assume other people in this planet have the worst intentions, just because the media seems to be tainted with stories of kidnappings, violence against others, and riots. We can’t forget that human beings have a choice. You can be evil, or you can do well and help mankind, and some people choose the latter. Life has a way of surprising us, especially when we expect nothing at all. In a way, people are able to find their way by working out the obstacles that scare us so much, and walking through a tunnel of doubt and fear, only to discover the world is much more beautiful than we could’ve imagined.A frail looking elderly man knocked at Abi’s café’s door and asked the owner for some food or money. Cesia Abigail, the owner of the café who is well in her 20s, replied with a question, “Why don’t you have a job? You know nothing is given to me for free, right?”
Marcus, the destitute man, told Abigail that he would love to work but it was next to impossible to find a job given that he had a history of felonies. Therefore, he took to stealing and panhandling for daily survival, as it was the only way for him to survive. He had made mistakes in the past, but felt he was unable to mend his past, and was now being punished in the present. He felt as if there was nothing he could do to change his life.He had made mistakes in the past for which he was being punished then.
According to Abigail, “Do something nice for someone today and don’t judge them just because they out there asking for money for we don’t know their situation… some deserve another shot.” She was short staffed that day, which is why she decided to offer the man a job, and help one another that way. Marcus happily accepted the offer with his eyes lit and ginormous smile. “I’ll do anything for some food,” he replied.
He always washed the dishes, took out the garbage and did all the other maintenance work efficiently, and with a smile on his face. She further added, “Once I pay him, guess what he does? He buys food from my restaurant (HE DECIDED TO PAY) because it makes him feel good!”
She shared a photo of Marcus at work and wrote, “God gave me this blessing so why can’t I bless others? This is what should break the internet, we want change? Well, start by making one.” This way she is urging people to become empathetic and try giving others a second chance for the sake of humanity and compassion. You never know what someone else has been through, or their reasons for being the way they are in the present. All you need is a little compassion and the willingness to pay it forward and help make this a better world.
Abigail’s El Salvadorian Café was not doing so well. She had been stressed out for a while, but felt a strong connection with Marcus. He has been working there for over two weeks now and she is extremely happy that she listened to her gut instinct and offered him a job. “Marcus is incredible,” she stated. Abigail remembers seeing him give half of his own sandwich to another homeless woman.
