Weeks and sometimes even months before Christmas arrives, kids everywhere are writing up their toy list for Santa. Some asks for big items while others just hope to receive one thing. It’s hard times for many families throughout the country and playing Saint Nick is sometimes impossible for parents. A seven-year-old in Bicknell, Indiana, got a job at his local McDonald’s fast food restaurant. The boy wanted to save as much money as possible just before the holidays. The food-chain giant turned Trenton Gardner down for a job a couple of times. But he was persistent. “He asked for a job and they told him that he was too young, and he burst into tears because he was so upset,” the general manager, Rhonda Butler says. “He was very perseverant, every time he would come in he was like ‘am I hired? Do I get a job? Can I start?’ you know he was like I can make food, I can do that.”He received his own hat, apron, and name tag.

The seven-year-old is using his earnings to buy other children toys.

“Me and his dad explained to him that not every kid is fortunate enough to get toys like he did for Christmas, and that made him very upset and very sad,” she says.

Although fairly new at his job, Trenton loves it. “You see when I wipe the tables and customers are at the tables, I get paid for it.”

Lyndsey says they have always raised Trenton with the knowledge that they will not always be there as parents to guide him when he is older.

“You don’t expect a little kid to be that excited about wanting to do something.” Butler admits, “He just wanted to be part of something and be a part of the team, and it’s good to be able to give him that little bit of excitement and something for him to look forward to.”

They donated toys which along with Trenton’s purchases went to the local Social Ministries in Indiana.
