The Topeka Zoo had a special delivery last month. A Hoffmann’s two-toed sloth named Jackie gave birth to a healthy baby sloth on November 20th. It’s Jackie’s 13th baby and the sloth father Mocha’s first. The sex of the baby is unknown at this time, but the baby and mother appear to be doing very well. Hoffmann’s two-toed sloths are indigenous to the rain forests of South and Central America. The nocturnal animals spend most of their time hanging in trees. This species name comes from having only two claws on their front hands- in some cases they can grow up to 3 inches long! In the wild they have a lifespan of about 10 to 12 years, although in captivity they can live up to 31 years. [IUCN][1] Red List classifies them as ‘least concern.’ The sloths main threat in the wild is habitat destruction. [1]: http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/4778/0
