Stephen Wilkes spends months developing the perfect photograph. In his breathtaking series “Day to Night,” Wilkes sits on rooftops, cranes, and scissor lifts to capture the change of time from sunrise to sunset. For each shoot, he spends an average of 15 hours snapping over 1500 images all from one spot: he selects about 50 photos that will digitally blend into one. The American photographer chooses locations that are recognizable and iconic. When he’s shooting, Wilkes tries to memorize incidents that he wants appear in the final panoramic portrait. Instead of being busy and chaotic moments, he finds isolated incidents happening alongside other people. “The images are so layered; there are so many elements that I love about the medium: street, history, people environment, narrative, and storytelling. I’m drawn to cities that have not only fantastic architecture, but also fascinating street life,” says Wilkes.
