Would you ever adopt a black dog? It might sound like a silly question, but for some, owning a black dog would be *out* of the question! In fact, surveys from animal shelters have shown that black dogs are actually adopted *less* than their lighter-colored counterparts. What’s the reason for this? Well black dogs (and black animals, in general) are often associated with superstitions of bad luck. There is a common stereotype that black dogs and other black animals are bad or evil. There is evidence of this throughout ancient history, as well as modern day films where black dogs are portrayed as terrible omens. The result is that some people feel afraid of black animals, claiming that they “just look too scary.” Fred Levy is not one of those people. The 44-year-old photographer recently launched the Black Dogs Project, a series of gorgeous photos of black dogs waiting to be adopted. The photos are meant to show a softer side to black pups, meant to encourage people to give black dogs a second look when thinking about adoption. After looking at these gorgeous photos, it’s hard to imagine not wanting to give each of these animals a home!
