Sudan is a special rhino. He is the last male northern white rhinoceros alive today. Some very brave men work tirelessly day and night to ensure Sudan’s survival in [Ol Pejeta][1], a wildlife conservatory in Kenya. The rhino rangers often times risk their lives ensuring Sudan and two females, Najin and Fatu survive in the African enclosure. The white rhino has been poached for its horns to near extinction. The horns are believed to contain medicinal benefits such as a cure for cancer and to boost virility although there is no scientific proof of either claim. Others purchase the horns purely for decoration. The northern white rhinos used to roam the green pastures of Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic Uganda, Chad and Sudan. The white rhino is the most endangered mammal in the world, with only five remaining. Steps have been taken to ensure Sudan’s existence; it has been dehorned to deter poachers as well as radio transmitters being drilled in to the horn stumps for tracking purposes.
