Bryce Casavant is a conservation officer in British Columbia, and part of his job is dealing with – and sometimes disposing of – animals that pose an immediate threat or nuisance to humans living in the area. However, when Casavant got his most recent call to kill two bear cubs who were thought to be a menace, his moral compass wouldn’t allow him to complete the assignment.

Casavant was ordered to kill the cubs after their mother had been killed for repeatedly raiding a freezer of meat and salmon. Her repetitive behavior showed that she was habituated to humans and would likely keep repeating the act, which is dangerous for residents in the community. However, according to local animal shelter representatives, the cubs posed no immediate threat. Still, Casavant was ordered to kill them anyways. However, he couldn’t bring himself to do it. Instead, he brought them to a shelter to be rehabilitated and reintroduced into the wild. As a result, he’s been suspended without pay. Now, there’s an online petition to reinstate Casavant.
