If a man fell down would you reach out and help him up? The majority will reply ‘yes.’ But what if that man was homeless and dirty? [Model Pranksters][1] conducted a social experiment which begs the question: Does appearance change how people are treated? To carry out the test, two men were used. The first man is dressed in a suit and tie while the other appears to be homeless. When the well-dressed man trips, he is immediately surrounded by passersby, all too willing to reach out and help him up. When the homeless man takes a tumble, he is almost completely ignored; the vast majority of folks walk on by and try to avoid the man’s attention. There is only one man who stops and helps. The video ends with a profound yet fitting quote from German writer and statesman Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, “You can easily judge the character of a man by how he treats those who can do nothing for him.” We should all aim to prove this social experiment wrong.
