It’s not often when a university professor divulges things about their personal lives. This is usually done with the hope that their experience will serve as an example or way to help someone who may be suffering in silence. Clinical psychologist, Dr. Kristina Kays shared her struggles with depression with her students at George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon. “I decided a few years back that it was something that would be important for my students to know,” she explains about her decision. “That it wasn’t just other people but it’s people they know and there is a way out.” One of her pupils was absorbing the information Kays divulged that day. Bekah Miles was going through her own difficult time but when she heard her professor speak to the class, she realized she was not alone.”I didn’t want to be afraid of it anymore and I didn’t want it to control me,” says Miles. Dr. Kays helped her talk about depression, a subject that still has a stigma attached to it.

The university student reached out to Dr Kay and Miles says her professor, “helped me find the right help that I needed.”

Biles shared a photo of her tattoo on Facebook, making her post go viral with people all over the world sharing the message. “You’re not alone. We’re not alone. I mean clearly – there’s at least 300,000 shares of the post. Clearly we’re not alone,” says Miles.
