High school senior, Scott Dunn was in a horrific car accident on May 22, 2016. Doctors had to place Scott in a medically induced coma. When he awoke three days later, one of the first things he asked his mom was what day it was, she told him it was May 28th. He looked at his mom and said, “I missed my graduation.” Benjamin Fausey, the principal at East Juniata High School in McAlisterville, Pennsylvania, had been in communication with the Dunn family, getting updates on their son’s recovery. When he heard Scott had woken up, he informed the family that the school wanted to do something special for him. Fausey says students only get one high school graduation in their lifetime. Despite students being out for summer, they returned to their high school for one final celebration. He was sedated for about a week. Almost three weeks later, his principal, teachers, students, and parents returned to the school to throw Scott his graduation ceremony.

“All the students were all excited and in their graduation gowns and caps again. There was so much positive energy,” explains Fausey.

“I don’t know how to even explain it. I’m speechless to know that this many people are behind me,” says Scott.

As Scott received his diploma, his classmates cheered and applauded for him.

Scott will focus on his recovery first and foremost. He will decide later whether to go to college or join the military.
