Every year in the United States horses are abused, neglected, and slaughtered. Many are raised to have one sole purpose: breeding, racing or meat consumption. The [Duchess Sanctuary][1] in Eugene, Oregon, wants to give these majestic animals a better life. Established in 2008, the 1,120-acreage allows the horses to run free so that, “they never have another bad day.” The rescued horses live in harmony with neighbors like geese, deer, and even goats. Horses are highly intelligent and social creatures.
