Regardless of how old we are, we seem to love catching a glimpse of a rainbow. It makes our surroundings more beautiful in an instant. For [Gabriel Dawe][1], rainbows serve as his inspiration and his artistic works bring the natural wonder indoors. The artist uses thousands of threads to create an optical illusion of the colourful arc in his ongoing series *Plexus*. Born and raised in Mexico, the textile artist is challenging notions of masculinity and gender identity. His aim is to make people think twice about machismo, gender roles, and stereotypes we have come to accept.
Dawe favors buildings with high ceilings and open concepts to play on the illusion that the rainbow is created by the light. He also uses enough spools of thread to knit a few hundred sweaters. Dawe’s sculptures are designed to change, based on the viewer’s vantage point. His work will be on display at the [Newark Museum][2] in New Jersey from September 19, 2015 to January 10, 2016. His work is centered in the exploration of textiles, aiming to examine the complicated construction of gender and identity in his native Mexico and attempting to subvert the notions of masculinity and machismo prevalent in the present day. His work has been exhibited in the US, Canada, Belgium, and the UK. A photo posted by DAWID TOMASZEWSKI (@dawid_tomaszewski) on Jul 28, 2014 at 3:29pm PDT.
