There are plenty of people around the world that grab a diet soda when they are thirsty. For many years diet soda has been promoted as healthy alternative to regular soda. The lack of sugar is supposed to be better for the body. The truth is though that it’s really not. Those artificial sweeteners are actually worse for you. Diet soda can lead to several health issues down the road if you are a regular drinker of them. What you’ll learn here today just may force you to make a change in what you drink every day. Artificial sweeteners can confuse the human body. The body has a natural ability to manage calories that are taken in but the fake sweetness can cause it confusion leading to several health issues. The body can actually tell when something is sweet and does what it needs to with it. If there is artificial sweetness the body will do the wrong things with it.

Researchers at Harvard have found that those who drink diet soda for a long time suffer 30% more reduction in normal kidney operations. The study was done on people that have consumed diet soda for twenty years or more.

Long time consumption of diet soda can lead to a 67% higher chance of getting Type 2 Diabetes. That’s just one of several potential health issues.

For ten years the University of Miami and Columbia University conducted a huge study, following more than 2,000 adults. One of the things they found was that people who drink diet soda on a daily basis are more likely to have heart attack or stroke.

That goes for regular soda as well. Soda drinkers in general are at a higher risk to get asthma because of the ingredients.

It is the most commonly used artificial sweetener in diet soda. What it does to the body is it attacks your brain. It chips away at the brain’s antioxidant defense system. That can lead to a host of problems down the road.

Kombucha is a drink made of fermented tea and it’s a much healthier option than drinking diet soda. It has the same type of texture without all of the health risks.

Recent studies have also shown that diet soda can be as damaging to teeth as battery acid. Remember the old days when dentists said to drink diet soda rather than regular soda because it was better for your teeth? It turns out they were wrong.

Daily diet soda drinkers are at a 36% higher risk of developing Metabolic Syndrome. The artificial sweeteners are just not a good alternative to the sugar in regular soda.

A study that was conducted in Australia showed that 13.3% of those surveyed with asthma and 15.6% of those studied with COPD, drank more than two cups of soda each day. Those numbers aren’t astoundingly high but they are still worth noting.

The artificial sweeteners cause a lot of damage. They could lead to high blood pressure… that could lead to arterial plaque buildup… that could lead to heart damage.

HDL, or high-density lipids, can stop cardiovascular episodes. Low HDL is directly tied to a higher risk for stroke and heart disease

The body uses food for energy or will turn it into triglycerides. Fat cells store those triglycerides and they’re released when your body needs energy before your next meal. High amounts of triglycerides can show a diet that is high in fat and simple carbohydrates. Diet soda will give the body high amounts of triglycerides, leading to obesity because there is too much for the body to burn off.

Those that have extra fat in their abdominal areas face a higher risk of several health issues. A couple of the bigger risks are lung and heart problems.

The next time you are thirsty don’t reach for a diet soda. You’ll still be thirsty after you finish it. The ingredients can actually lead to dehydration.

Aspartame is not the only dangerous artificial sweetener on the market. So don’t think you are safe just because your favorite product doesn’t use it. The product more than likely uses some other kind of non-calorie sweetener that is still not good for you.

A 2014 study that was reported on in the journal Reproductive Toxicology reported that “The nutritional environment during embryonic, fetal and neonatal development plays a crucial role in the offspring’s risk of developing diseases later in life. Although non-nutritive sweeteners (NNS) provide sweet taste without contributing to energy intake, animal studies showed that long-term consumption of NSS, particularly aspartame, starting during the perigestational period may predispose the offspring to develop obesity and metabolic syndrome later in life.” They added that “The data reviewed herein suggest that NNS consumption by pregnant and lactating women should be looked with particular caution and requires further research.”

All sodas have phosphoric acid. That includes regular soda as well. The substance can interfere with your body’s ability to absorb calcium. If this happens you can suffer from weak bones and other bone issues.

Diet soda may not contain regular sugar that would lead to an eventual sugar crash, but it does have other issues. The caffeine they contain can lead to depression, especially in younger groups. A study that was published in the Journal of School Health in 2009 said that “In particular, youth appear vulnerable to increased depressive symptoms with increasing caffeine consumption.”

It has been promoted as a healthier alternative to regular soda for years. It turns out though, that all of those promotions were wrong. Study after study has verified this.

Another thing that has been linked to diet soda is suffering from headaches. It could be from the amount of caffeine or the amount of the artificial sweeteners. It could also be the combination of the two.

When you drink a diet soda these are the things that you are ingesting into your body: artificial coloring, phosphoric acid, potassium benzoate and citric acid. None of those are good for you but when you combine them together it’s even worse.

Caffeine puts a lot of pressure on your liver and can damage its ability to cleanse and get rid of toxins from the body. There are plenty of healthier alternatives for you on the market.
