*The Voice of Holland* made its debut in 2010. The premise of the show includes four judges who are famous singers choosing unknowns for their teams to mentor. The participants audition while the judges have their chairs turned away from them, thus, judging exclusively on their voice. Once the teams are picked, every week contestants are giving new songs to learn to perform while judges narrow down their choices until you get to the finals. Once in the finals, the vote is determined 50% by the judges and 50% by the audience watching at home. In 2011, the American version, *The Voice*, debuted. His music has been described as Latin urban.

His influences range from the late salsa singer Hector Lavoe to Michael Jackson, and Justin Timberlake.

“I am an urban performer, I sing reggaeton. If you listen to my last album there are ballads, mambo, merengue, and reggaeton and underground stuff. I like to show the versatility that I have to perform,” he boasts.

Although his fans around Latin and North America may be shocked to know this talented artist had a chance to become a professional soccer player.

It was either choosing music over a slot to be on the starting lineup for Colombia’s soccer team.

“It was like dumping a lover. It hurt. But I saw a chance, and I had to take it,” Maluma tells Billboard.

He would be following in the footsteps of Ricky Martin and Shakira.

The Colombian heartthrob was one of the favorite judges on the show.

He was also a judge for La Voz Kids Colombia three years ago.

The final episode aired Sunday night on May 14, 2017.

The judge and his protégé performed together on the final episode.

Maluma’s hair is buzzed short.

Maluma was one of the judges along the partnering duo of Mexican singers Emmanuel and Mijares and Spanish gypsy singer Rosario.

When the final episode aired Sunday night, Maluma took to Instagram to celebrate.

“So much happiness cannot fit in my heart,” he wrote. “Thank you Mexico and congratulations Eduardo. This is yours!”

At the end of 2016 he received criticism for his song, “Cuatro Babys.” The song was labelled as misogynistic by many and a petition was launched to have it removed from music platforms.

“You’ll always be judged for one thing or another. Just do what comes out of your heart, what makes you happy. If they talked about Jesus Christ, why would it surprise you to have them talk about you?” he wrote.

“It was not live, it’s true. Three finals were recorded and the one with the most votes was the one aired,” she posted.

“I want to be completely mainstream,” he admits. Although he promises to “never not sing in Spanish, or at least Spanglish. I want to cross over, but not in a way that ever leaves my audience behind.”
