When we see someone that we love begin the process of passing on, we want to do everything in our power to ease their suffering. Whether that’s making the journey pain-free, or playing their favorite music for them, we just want to see them happy before they leave this world. This group of nurses received a strange request from a dying patient, a request that was forbidden in the hospital they worked in, and did everything they could to make it happen.He knew that he was dying and had one simple request: he wanted to see his best friend one last time. You may be thinking that it’s no big deal to let someone see their best friend, but Peter’s best friend is a bit different than most.
Peter adopted Shep eight years ago and they were inseparable from the start, but after Peter’s wife passed away, their bond only grew stronger. All Peter wanted to do was see his friend one last time before he died.
This means that animals aren’t allowed in the hospital. NHS Tayside charge nurse Cheryl White and her staff knew that they needed to do something to help him.
Only a few hours before Peter passed away, Shep was able to visit his best friend. “He really thought he would never see Shep again. It was an amazing moment to see the two of them together, and Shep was so excited to see him,” said Ashley Stevens, Robson’s granddaughter.
We’re sure many of you can agree that sometimes all you need is your animal to make you feel better. And even though he was passing away, all Peter needed was his Shep.
“Absolutely amazed and touched today from NHS Ninewells hospital, our Granddad’s last and final wish was to see his dog one more time. Still in shock that the wish was granted and they went above and beyond today and made a dying man very happy,” said Ashley.
“The ward 3 team has done a wonderful thing for this family. It is often the little things that mean the most to patients and their families and I’m so pleased that the staff were able to grant this wish,” said Tayside Chief Executive Lesley McLay.
She posted the video online and since then it’s received more than 650,000 views!
