For teenagers, having their own room is a pretty big deal. Where else can you go when you’re feeling sad, lonely, or you simply want to relax and forget about the world? It seems like teens are always looking for a personal space to hide. But what would happen if a child didn’t have that personal space? Well, one mom by the name of Laura Medicus knew what that was like for her daughter and she was determined to give her some extra space by turning her closet into something quite magical. To that end, she went on a DIY construction project that should earn her a mother of the year award.Her child, Sylvia, was basically a reflection of her when she was a teenager. She preferred to stay hidden from the world when she wasn’t in school. Unfortunately, poor Sylvia didn’t have a closet space to hide in.
For now, Sylvia needed a place that was hidden so that she could reflect freely and away from the vicinity of her mom and anyone else who might be passing by. So, Laura came up with the perfect solution.
Realizing that there was no turning back, she told her husband what she had planned to create this magical, mysterious personal space, and after insisting a bit, he finally gave in and helped her to build it.
The teen had an armoire by the door because the home, which was built in 1938, didn’t have a built-in closet. The only reason Laura had one was because a previous homeowner renovated their room and created one. Now their closet would serve as their daughter’s secret space.
The armoire was anchored to the wall so that it wouldn’t fall when Sylvia walked in. Both mother and daughter were already excited about the project since they both shared a love for hidden places. Now, construction could begin.
Sylvia would gain access to her secret place through the wardrobe. Laura was actually quite excited about the concept, even though she knew that the secret room wouldn’t exactly last forever. But for the moment, it would serve its purpose in giving Sylvia her personal space.
Once Sylvia gets older and outgrows her personal space, Laura suspects she’ll have to tear down the wall in order to make her daughter’s room a little bigger. But for now, Sylvia will have her private room and it is awesome.
However, the space has become livable as the teen watches TV shows on her iPad and talks with her BFF. It truly is a dream come true for any teenager and Sylvia is enjoying every single moment that she gets to spend inside there.
Since Laura and her husband knew that the personal space would eventually get repurposed as a closet, they didn’t go overboard on the budget, especially since they needed to make sure it would be easy to disassemble once Sylvia got older.
Since Sylvia enjoys magic, fantasy, mystery and other things like Sherlock Holmes, Merlin, and Harry Potter, she’ll definitely get good use of her closet within a closet. A secret space that’s just for her is a delight for any teenager.
