Andy Goldsworthy is an artist who relies on nature to provide him with the tools and the canvas he needs for his work. The Brit uses leaves, ice, rocks, and snow to create ephemeral sculptures in landscapes and cities. His creations can be found in Canada, Brazil, Spain, and the United States, to name a few. Goldsworthy doesn’t mind his work will eventually return to nature. “When I make something, in a field or street, it may vanish but it’s part of the history of those places,” explains Goldsworthy. Living in Scotland, he sees dealing with the ever-changing elements as being part of the future. Using organic material also has it’s challenges. It can involve being in freezing conditions, around icy rocks, swamps, and unpredictable rivers. Nonetheless, the artist admits the most dangerous places he has worked in is where he lives.
