In August of 2014, something really cool happened at Tucson’s Reid Park Zoo — and you probably don’t remember hearing about it. Here’s the story: A 24-year-old African elephant gave birth to a calf, and the experience was just as remarkable as you might think. Though this was Semba the elephant’s first successful birth, there’s something particularly special about seeing this moment on film. In the video below, Semba encourages her new calf to get up and take his first steps. It’s fascinating how quickly they learn to stand on their own four feet — and that mom is there, every step of the way.
