When Amanda Scarpinati was three months old, the unthinkable happened: She rolled off the couch and into a boiling steam vaporizer, scalding much of her small body. Scarpinati spent months in the hospital recovering from those burns, primarily being cared for by a nurse named Sue Berger. 28 years later, Scarpinati was able to reunite with the nurse who cared for her, and the experience was profound. Here’s what she had to say about the reunion in an interview: > Growing up as a child, disfigured by the burns, I was bullied and picked on, tormented. I’d look at those pictures and talk to her, even though I didn’t know who she was. I took comfort looking at this woman who seemed so sincere, caring for me.

**”I couldn’t believe it, couldn’t believe it,” Scarpinati said during an interview. “The emotion I felt I wasn’t prepared for when I saw her. It was almost like hugging a mom.”**
