For one reason, Nancy Pelosi is speaker again, and that’s because her party picked up seats in predominantly moderate districts. Unfortunately, the 79-year-old congresswoman is having a difficult time reigning in the extreme liberals, who have gone so far left that they could risk losing the election for the Democrats. In fact, they’re making it extremely easy for President Trump to point out their socialist ways. Now, it’s up to Pelosi to figure out to stop the nation from defining the Democratic party by their most progressive members. It goes without saying that the Democrats tend to have a difficult time keeping it all together, especially when it comes to organization.
The Democrats are dealing with some pretty extensive trust issues with the DNC. Considering that the DNC turned their back on Bernie Sanders in favor of Hillary Clinton in 2016, the Democrats need to make sure that the same thing doesn’t happen again now that Sanders has found himself in the lead for the 2020 campaign. The Democrats are so obsessed with getting Trump out of the White House that showing unity among the members of the party might just be impossible. According to The Washington Post, “The far left’s frustration with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is on the rise.”
Recently, Ilhan Omar, one of the two first Muslim women to join Congress, has been giving the Democrats a run for their money. When Omar’s comments were viewed as anti-Semitic, it was Pelosi who had to ensure that a House resolution was passed condemning anti-Semitism and other forms of hate, even though it didn’t directly point out Omar.
Now, Omar is going toe-to-toe with President Trump, who was triggered by her callous description of the terrorists who attacked the United States on September 11, 2001. In response to Omar complaining that Muslims were being treated as second-class citizens because “some people did something and that all of us were starting to lose access to our civil liberties,” The New York Post put a picture of the burning twin towers on the front page with the headline “Here’s Your Something.”
In retaliation, President Trump hopped on Twitter to write a post where he called Omar a “sick monster.” In a post titled “WE WILL NEVER FORGET,” Trump tweeted footage of the World Trade Center with Omar’s comments spliced in. Soon enough, Omar began to receive death threats, causing the media to point fingers at Trump for “inciting violence,” as if his comments were a direct command for people to start threatening the politician.
According to The Post, “Omar’s allies over the weekend were upset by what they viewed as Pelosi’s delayed response” in supporting Omar. In Pelosi’s first statement criticizing Trump, she didn’t mention Omar at all. Then, on Monday, Pelosi said that Trump’s sharing of the video was “beneath the dignity of the Oval Office.” Pelosi is also receiving some backlash from the Liberals, who are upset over Pelosi’s jab at Ocasio-Cortez during an interview with “60 Minutes,” in which she said that Ocasio-Cortez’s “wing” of the party included “like five people.”
On Monday, President Trump amped up his attacks on Omar, saying that she’s “very disrespectful” towards America and Israel and has “got a way about her that’s very, very bad for our country.” President Trump is using Omar as a way to get to Pelosi, who kind of outsmarted him during the 35-day government shutdown. In a tweet, President Trump wrote: “Before Nancy, who has lost all control of Congress and is getting nothing done, decides to defend her leader, Rep. Omar, she should look at the anti-Semitic, anti-Israel and ungrateful U.S. HATE statements Omar has made. She is out of control, except for her control of Nancy!”
Trump is essentially calling out Pelosi for losing control of her left-wing Democrats, and she has become nothing more than a puppet for Omar. Even though Pelosi tends to rule with an iron fist, Trump has nothing nice to say to those that he’ll be running against in 2020.
Of course, Liberal critics are using Trump’s comments as a way of, once again, accusing the president of being a bigot. According to Jamelle Bouie, a Black columnist for The New York Times, “If Omar is a target, it has little to do with what she said and everything to do with who she is: A black Muslim woman — and an immigrant — whose very person disrupts the exclusionary ideal of a white Christian America.”
Needless to say, it’s all gotten out of hand, and even though she has apologized for her comments in the past, Omar doesn’t seem to be the candidate that will make the people happy. If they want to have any chance of taking Trump out of the White House, the Democrats really need to get their act together.
