One of the best parts about being a kid is realizing you have total autonomy over your own body, and you’re free to run and jump and play to your heart’s content. Unfortunately, children in wheelchairs don’t get to experience those small pleasures. That’s why one father wanted to make it up to them — and just in time for Halloween.. Founded by Ryan Weimer, the nonprofit Magic Wheelchair gives children in wheelchairs the Halloween costumes of their dreams. Weimer himself has three children who have Spinal Muscular Atrophy, and all of them are in wheelchairs. It was when one of his son’s requested to be a pirate for Halloween that Weimer got the idea: Instead of telling children they can’t be what they want to be because of their wheelchair, build their dreams around their wheelchair.
