YouTuber LUNA ANGEL made waves across the Internet when she posted a video of her pet budgerigar, Pi (or Pi-chan), incubating a store-bought quail egg to life. The YouTuber had purchased *uzura no tamago*, or quail eggs from a supermarket in Japan where she lives. They are commonly used when packing bento boxes due to their small size. After Luna gave one to Pi-chan to play with, the budgie took to her maternal instincts and kept the egg warm. Don’t fret just yet — the type of eggs purchased from any local grocery store in the U.S. are unfertilized and placed in the refrigerated section. In Japan and several other countries, eggs are sold at room temperature (remember that if you’re ever shopping abroad and think they’ve sold out). Fertilized eggs in cases abroad are still a rarity, but as we’ve seen here, not impossible. Other Japanese netizens have successfully hatched their own store-bought eggs.
