A 6-week-old cheetah named Ruuxa was the only one born to a cheetah mother at the San Diego Safari Park. Usually cheetahs have three to five cubs in a litter. When there’s only one the mother sometimes rejects it because its chances of survival in the wild are minimal. The staff wanted Ruuxa to have a companion so they paired the cub with a Rhodesian ridgeback puppy named Raina. The two will be lifelong companions. They play, take naps together, and snuggle to keep each other warm. As the two grow up together, the dog’s body language will let the cheetah know that there is nothing to fear in new or public surroundings and will help to calm and relax it.
