Everything happens for a reason. Every step we take, every decision we make will lead us to where we are supposed to be. It is believed that everything we do has a reason and purpose. Who we come in contact with is predetermined by a higher power. Whatever believes one may have, it is hard to ignore those circumstances where you are at the right place, at the right time. She was feeding chickens when she noticed an abandoned puppy. Luckily, her sister Juliana Castañeda Turner, owns and operates Juliana’s Animal Sanctuary. This is the only animal sanctuary in South America and the only vegan sanctuary in Colombia.

She found more pups in a sack. The canines were left there to die. They were weak, hungry, and dehydrated. They were also covered in fleas. The sisters estimated the animals to be a couple weeks old.

If the one puppy had not escaped from the sack, they would have all died.

“We rushed them to the vet … [and] started them on typical puppy shots and flea and heartworm prevention,” Juliana shared on the sanctuary’s Facebook page. The sisters believe it was someone living close by who threw the puppies in the rice sack. “The people … [are] very evil with animals and have many dogs,” Castañeda Turner said.

The puppies are in recovery mode. Castañeda is determined to get them in perfect health find them their forever homes. Finding a home for them will be considerably difficult as the number of stray dogs for adoption in the area is very high. Secondly, the pups don’t trust humans easily, making it difficult for them to bond.

“They have fear, shaking all the time,” Castañeda says. “You know I am upset, sad and in shock but at the same time, even when I don’t have all the money that they need, I will try my best. If she can’t find families to adopt the canines, Castañeda plans to keep them in the sanctuary with her.
