6 Surprising Facts About Sherlock You Probably Didn’t Know November 9, 2018

It may be almost 130 years since Sherlock Holmes made its literary debut in the United Kingdom but the detective with high intelligence and skilled observation has never gone out of style. Written by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes has been portrayed in 226 films since it debuted on the big screen in 1900 with *Sherlock Holmes Baffled*. The versions vary from Holmes and his best friend John Watson in the Victoria era as well as modern times. When the TV series *Sherlock* aired in 2010, it catapulted the careers of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman who play Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, respectively. The series creators adapted the original storyline from Doyle’s original work and transformed it to London today. The show is so successful and has such a massive global following that fans are willing to wait up to a year to watch one episode. Die-hard fans will get to finally see season four of the BBC production when it debuts January 1, 2017.Many of Holmes clients seek his help at his lofty apartment.

Co-creator and actor on the series Mark Gatiss wrote on Twitter at the time, “this is a new one on me. Scene incomplete owing to approaching looters. Unbelievable times.”

In the books, inspector Lestrade’s first name is never mentioned. He is only referred as Detective G Lestrade. In the series his name is Greg and Sherlock Holmes is always forgetting it.

Many of the actors in the show are actually family in the literary sense. Sherlock and Mycrofts’ parents are played by Wanda Ventham and Timothy Carlton. They are also Benedict Cumberbatch’s real-life parents. Amanda Abbington plays Mary Morstan who is John Watson’s wife played by Martin Freeman. Freeman and Abbington are common-law partners and have two children together. And Una Stubbs who gives life to Mrs. Hudson, Holmes’ housekeeper has known Cumberbatch since he was a child as she is close friends with his mom.

The first episode in season three is the most watched in the series with a viewership of 12.72 million. This may be due to the fact that this is when Sherlock finally returns from the dead.

The show creators however, knew they had to go with Martin Freeman as the chemistry between him and Cumberbatch made him the obvious choice. Matt Smith is not complaining either as he landed the lead role in the BBC series Doctor Who.

Although in the books the two characters address each other by their last names, the writers of the show felt using first names reflects the bond in their friendship.

Cumberbatch put the rumours to rest during a recent interview. “We never say never on the show. I’d love to revisit it, I’d love to keep revisiting it, I stand by that,” he explained.
