Sia Furler, who usually goes just by Sia, is an Australian artist and songwriter that has captured hearts all around the world with her voice — she is an absolute power house — and lyrical mastery. Her musical career began in the mid-90s when she did vocals for the acid jazz band Crisp. As a songwriter, she penned “Pretty Hurts” for Beyoncé and collaborated with Britney Spears for “Perfume,” to name a few. She has also written and recorded her own top hits such as “Chandelier,” from her 2014 album 1000 Forms of Fear, and “Elastic Heart,” originally produced with The Weeknd and Diplo for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, later re-released as a solo version in 2015. And on top of all this, she has retained an air of mystery. She’s made a risky choice in the music industry: she does not show her face during her appearances and performances for a number of reasons. However, the wind worked against her during a recent concert at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado, revealing her face briefly to fans. If you’ve followed international pop sensation Sia, you know what she looks like, or you’ve searched her on Google Images, but you also know that she prefers to appear in public like this.
In an interview with ABC News in 2014, she explained that she did not want to be publicly scrutinized. “I’ve been writing pop songs for pop stars for a couple years and see what their lives are like and that’s just not something I want,” she voiced.
“I thought, ‘What doesn’t exist in pop music at the moment’? And it was mystery.”
“Well, it’s so that I can go to Target and buy a hose if I want to. Or if I’m in need of a restroom and I can’t find one, I could go by the side of the road.”
If you’re a talented artist that continues to produce good music, chances are you’re going to be recognized anyway. However, that doesn’t keep Sia from sticking to her guns, and it seems to be working out quite well for her. Here she is with Kanye West for their collaboration of “Reaper” in 2015.
