Damariscotta is a small town in Lincoln County, Maine with a population of just over 2,200 people. Every October, specifically on Columbus Day Weekend, locals enjoy a Pumpkinfest and Regatta featuring giant pumpkins. According to the official site for the event, the mission is to help educate people about the specific agricultural science used in growing these gourds and also to provide local non-profit organizations with the opportunity to promote themselves through activities and fundraising. Artists from all around Maine participate in the challenge of decorating dozens of Atlantic giant pumpkins to display around town. Visitors come from other places in New England and beyond to view these beauties. The Regatta, which involves boats made from pumpkin, is one of the most exciting features of the event.
