It seems there is a beauty trend popping up every five minutes. From no-heat hairstyles, Ash Balayage hair, braid to knots, copper nails, to charcoal face masks, these are for fun generally. For the most part, beauty trends are meant to work with what you have, highlighting your own, unique beauty. We have to understand that just because something in vogue does not mean we have to torture ourselves to achieve a look through tanning beds, butt implants and corsets. But there are some trends that actually fight back at something that in the past was actually pasted over with heavy concealer because it wasn’t considered necessarily beautiful. In the past, women would use make-up to cover their freckles. In extreme cases they used bleaching creams and laser their skin to remove freckles permanently. Nonetheless, exposure to the sun would immediately make them pop up again.

Women are opting to tattoo their faces with permanent freckles.

Freckling consist of tattoo artists adding naturally-looking dots over the face. Think of a modern-day version of the Raggedy Ann doll.

“In terms of the freckles, when they are ‘freshly done,’ they will appear swollen almost like bee stings, and the swelling will go down within a couple hours and you’ll be left with your cute, fresh freckles,” Rainbow told NewBeauty.

Rainbow does warn people who are looking at following this trend to do their homework and know the artist who is going to ink their face.

“Because this is your face, it’s important that you do your research and find artists who aren’t afraid to show their portfolio and healed work. Even if this is ‘semipermanent,’ there are risks, such as technicians who will go too deep or not use the proper inks,” Rainbow explains.

She says women want the fresh-faced, cute, and innocent look. Plus it’s the same idea of women with straight hair wanting curly hair and vice versa.

“You have to match the right shade of freckle to the skin,” she told the Today show. “Every single person needs a different shade and tone to make it look natural.”

“They have to be a wide array of shapes, sizes, and darkness,” Southern says.

Rainbow who is credited with starting this trend says this is perfect for women who “get some in the summertime with sun exposure, but want them yearlong.”

“I experimented on myself—I really don’t recommend tattooing your own face—but once I saw that it worked out, and I liked the effect, I decided to do hers,” she admits.

“When you’re young, freckles can look adorable even though they’re a sign of sun damage,” she told NewBeauty. “But when you’re over the age of 30, they are distracting to the eye and reduce attention to beautiful features in the face such as the eyes.”

There are kits that come with the right tipped pen to draw the freckles in. There are also washable face tattoos that glue-on.

Also those with a scar can opt for this procedure to blend it with the skin.

These freckles are pretty cool, just make sure you love yourself with or without them.
