It is a victory for most of us to remember to eat breakfast, but one photographer has gone above and beyond to make of this forgotten meal an art. After carefully preparing symmetric breakfast meals “from pastries to arepas,” this individual captures an exquisite blend of global foods, culture, and design aesthetics through daily photographs. The result? Symmetry Breakfast, a popular Instagram and creative outlet for local food producers, retailers and designers. According to the official site, the photos are symmetric for a reason: romance. It is about one person making breakfast for their partner as an expression of love. The couple who created Symmetry Breakfast kept their identities anonymous at the start– the Instagram byline read only “for my boyfriend and me” for quite some time – but revealed who they were in late 2014. Behind this project is Michael Zee, who has been preparing breakfast for his boyfriend, menswear designer Mark van Beek, since they moved in together in April 2013. It is nice, I think, to see a man in the kitchen and especially so for the reasons, the passions, that Zee has shared.
