Since 1907, the ball has had many changes and makeovers. This year’s “Gift of Wonder” design features 2,688 Waterford crystal triangles in varying sizes. The theme celebrates the wonderment at what 2016 is going to bring. When the ball is illuminated, it will give over 16 million color combinations and billions of patterns giving a kaleidoscope effect. The 11,875 pound sphere is no delicate structure as it is designed to withstand temperature fluctuation and high winds.
