A group of Americans were on a trip to Balmoral Estate in Scotland when they came upon a little old lady, walking the grounds in an overcoat and a headscarf. "Do you live around here?" they asked her. She responded by telling them that she lives in a house nearby. The American tourists went on their merry way, not once realizing that the woman they had just spoken to was the Queen of England. Apparently, this happens more than you might think. When she's out of the context of Buckingham Palace, and dressed in more modest attire, people tend to overlook Queen Elizabeth -- especially tourists. And, since she's always in the spotlight, she has no problem staying undercover.
But would you recognize her without her tiara and signature colorful attire?
Countess Sophie of Wessex explained the Queen's incognito approach in an interview: "Don't forget that when she turns up somewhere, the crowds are two, three, four, ten, 15 deep, and someone wants to be able to say they saw a bit of the Queen's hat as she went past. "
