When I was pregnant with my first child, I was excited to be part of the sisterhood of mothers. In my mind, I pictured an environment filled with encouragement, support and empathy from other moms. Reality however, was not quite what I expected. Instead I encountered lots of passionate opinions and assumptions based around everything from breastfeeding, being a working mom to what types of diapers and wipes I was using. It turned out, every mom had an opinion. There is nothing more disheartening and discouraging than encountering a strong-willed, judgmental and narrow-minded parent. However, the one thing that unites us all is the love and unquestioning devotion to our kids. By the time I had my second child, I found the empathy and courage that I longed for from others. Whenever I see a stressed out mom on the verge of tears, I smile and give her a look that says, “I have been in your shoes.” The video below captures a snapshot of the perfect storm: several groups of people with strong view points about raising kids on a collision course in a playground, no less.
