In a delightful new project at the Renwick Gallery in New York City, a handful of contemporary artists were commissioned to produce work around one central theme: “Wonder.” As you can imagine, each artists’ interpretation of that theme was different, but it resulted in a surprisingly cohesive collection, otherworldly and surrealistic in composition. The artists commissioned were Jennifer Angus, Chakaia Booker, Gabriel Dawe, Tara Donovan, Patrick Dougherty, Janet Echelman, John Grade, Maya Lin, and Leo Villareal. Each of their works was created using everyday materials, including marbles, string, and bits of wood, and it’s being called immersive art — art that people experience instead of merely looking at. You can see the artists’ contributions to “Wonder” below.
