In Lakewood, Ohio all of the students walk to school because there aren’t any school buses, they never had any and never will. The Lakewood schools were designed so that every child in the district lives less than two miles from school, and most are within a mile. All of the students walk or ride a bike. The school system does provide a small transportation program for 100 students with special needs. The walking policy saves the the district about $1 million a year and allows the resources to be used for classrooms. The parents love it, they say it gives their children time to socialize, get exercise, and energized in the mornings.
