Dogs are man’s best friend, but did you know that during World War I cats were the pets of choice aboard military ships and in the trenches? Cats would hunt mice and other vermin that could cause damage to woodwork, ropes, wiring, cargo, and food provisions on ships. This also protected the soldiers from disease. Both sailors and soldiers embraced felines as pets and mascots to help relieve stress and keep them company.
