Color blocking in colors reminiscent of Crayola had us all felling nostalgic and excited for everything this season has to offer. Vibrant red made its way across many runways from Victoria Beckham to Preen. Bold and bright head-to-toe looks like these were clear statement pieces on the catwalk this sunny season. Trends like these don’t just stay on the runway, they hit the streets.
One of the best parts about any fashion week, Paris, NY, London, or Milan–is seeing how runway trends translate into street style.
Adding a ready-to wear aspect is essential for successful street style, but that doesn’t mean it has to be boring. Let’s take a look at some of New York’s best street style.
Pastels hit the runway this PFW and hints of the sweet tones were seen throughout some of the most prominent collections.
Cèline showed us how to pair two pastels together, Preen played with abstract silhouettes, while Chanel proved pastels can be edgy with the right accessories. Armani played with flirty lengths in an attempt to attract a younger crowd with their Emporio collection, and we have to say we are here for it.
This women shows fashion photographers her take on this years hot pastel trend, giving it life with these cropped lilac jeans.
The way she breaks up the color blocking with an eye catching silver shoe and a plastic hat gives the look texture every outfit needs.
If you think spring fashion can’t be fierce, then think again.
This year at NYFW we saw something that is usually reserved for the holiday season–sequins and sparkles. But no one shied away from these long and bold statement pieces, many embracing them loud and proud.
Tom Ford, Oscar de la Renta, Coach, Mark Jacobs, Michael Kors, almost everyone snuck some sparkle in. This trend is likely to stay, as it was inspired by a time that seems to be all over fashion houses this year–the 80’s. There is much more to cover, but first, let’s check out how these looks made their way to the streets.
Everyone needs a pair of these wide leg sequin trousers–just look at them.
And I have to say, she’s rocking them with that shoe and sock combo. If you can’t see yourself rocking pants this loud, don’t worry the next one is probably more your style.
Fabric choices weren’t the only reminders that the 80’s is coming back in full-force, we saw some silhouettes that basically confirmed it.
Everything from broad shoulders and boxy coats, to high-waisted jeans and fanny-packs were resurrected this year. However, everything had a modern twist, giving new life to some of our favorite styles. Let’s see how these 80’s trends have inspired people everywhere.
This long sequin 80’s prom dress inspired look shouldn’t make me as happy as it does, because lets face it, the 80’s wasn’t the best regarding formal wear (sorry mom, I know you think otherwise).
The fabric and shoulder shape screams the 1980’s but the embroidery and styling bring it to modern times.
Animal prints were found all over the runways too, giving us a total 80’s vibe.
Animal prints always circulate the fashion scene but this season it was in full force.
Tom Ford tells us how it is with the all red-cheetah ensemble, Adam Selman in the center with the slouchy shoulder piece, and Michael Kors in a classic yet modern cheetah trench. Fashion week’s street style is arguably better than the shows themselves, and my next photo is proof.
These yellow trousers compliment this long cheetah trench perfectly, while her hair effortlessly adds a pop of color.
These bright colors soften up the heaviness of such a loud print. But wait, there’s more.
Animal prints aren’t the only loud prints making a statement this runway season.
It seems as though the theme for this spring/summer is to use unexpected fabrics, which break seasonal boundaries, creating a fresh take on checkered prints.
Although mixing prints can be tricky, many designers, like pictured above, show us how to lighten them up making it look easy. Pair a print like this with the right silhouette, and you’ve got a head turning look.
When a print like this is put on a silk or delicate fabric like this, it basically does the work for you. Pair it with bold and complimentary colors, and you’re ready to go.
Fashion is about self-expression, not blending in. Let your mood help you mix and match, and remember, have fun with it.
There was something else unexpected that hit runways all over the world this season.
Feathers–from embellishments to full gowns, they took over the cat walks this year.
There were jackets, dresses, boots, and just about everything in between. Although these look great on the runway, you may have to hold off on pieces embellished with feathers until April showers are over and May flowers are in full bloom, because these are definitely not rain ready.
An exciting way to incorporate feathers into your closet is by choosing statement pieces like this skirt.
High enough not to hit the ground, yet long enough to give that chic off the runway look.
Another strong theme seen during the main four fashion weeks was a type of ethereal softness, mostly interpreted through fur, lace, and dainty designs.
Here we see, from left to right, Christian Siriano, Tory Burch, Marina Moscone and Brock Collection hitting all the right spots. I’m here for this dreamy feminine vibe, because you can pair it with harder, more edgy pieces to get an interesting juxtaposition. Let’s see how these looks translated to the street.

The belt adds a little roughness and brings the eye to the smallest part of her body, while the sheer ruffles give this sweet look a sexy vibe.
It seems that this spring/summer is all about texture.
Does fringe ever really go out of style. No, and for good reason. It’s fun, playful, and flirty–perfect for spring.
Fringe is the perfect way to add texture to any outfit, and the sight of it makes people happy because it brings any outfit to life. Don’t you remember Rhianna’s green fringe L’Impasse jumpsuit during the 2016 VMA’s. It’s officially an iconic look. RiRi’s not the only one who loves a good fringe detail.
I wouldn’t want to walk the streets of NY with these gorgeous pants, as they may do a little street cleaning on the way, but regardless, THEY’RE FABULOUS.
Accent or main attraction, fringe is back on the map. Too bold for you. Check out the next look, it may be more your style.
Many designers decided to show us their interpretation of tropical glam, something we see time and time again, only not like this.
Another trend that feels perfect for warm weather is the ultra-glamorous palm beach style that flooded the runways.
Marc Jacobs commented that his goal was to embody a 1960’s Palm Beach socialite, but elevated a notch or three, and he hit the nail right on the head. Interestingly enough, street style everywhere has taken a liking to this sunny influence.
Sleeper sets have been on trend all year, and now that it’s almost summer, they’re coming to life in tropical prints.
This version shines a light on a more relaxed and casual style, verses the over-the-top runway art we got to witness.
