Nicola Congdon and her mother Ann rescue retired, battered chickens at their farm in Falmouth, Cornwall, England. The hens spent most of their lives in cages laying eggs. When their prime years pass, they are tossed out or slaughtered. The mother and daughter duo, have welcomed about 30 chicks into their home. Living in a more natural and humane environment however, takes time for the animals to adjust to. Their bodies do not acclimatize to cold temperatures and they also pluck out their own feathers from stress. To help the battered fowl keep warm in the winter months, the Congdon’s are knitting sweaters for them. She said the wool covers are also a great way to identify the chickens. The pair have inquiries from people willing to buy the sweaters from all over the world. Instead, the good samaritans ask for a donation to an AIDS orphanage in South Africa.
