When the Zwick’s moved into their house 10 years ago in Neenah, Wisconsin, they knew there was a bunker in their backyard. Although, they just assumed it was empty. For that decade, the family never really thought to look at what was inside the shelter. The chamber was built in 1960 by homeowner and surgeon, Frank Pansch, at the height of the Cold War. The Zwick’s found candies, candles, and a phone directory among other things. Bunkers were commonly built by Americans who feared a nuclear attack from the former Soviet Union. The small chambers were meant to protect people from the radiation of the affected area.
