When I was a kid, I absolutely loved Richard Scarry’s books. Lowly Worm and the rest of the crew taught me about letters, days of the week, jobs, and other everyday language. What I didn’t notice, though, was how outdated some of the phrasing in the books is — not surprising for a series that was first published in the 1960’s. Now, certain elements of the books have been changed to keep up with the times, providing today’s young readers with a more updated lexicon to learn from. The changes are subtle, but make a world of difference.
