It’s not every day that a song performed entirely in another language can hold our attention — especially if there’s only one instrument involved — but this particular performance is pretty special. Written by the eighteenth-century poet Seán Clárach Mac Dómhnaill, Mo Ghille Mear is a traditional allegorical song originally composed in Gaelic, the centuries-old Irish traditional tongue. The song describes the poet’s sadness over the departure of Prince Charles Edward Stuart, and discusses Ireland’s decline in his absence. Of course, as the song is entirely in Gaelic, we’d be none the wiser to the story– but listening to this group of people singe with just one drum as backup is one of the prettiest things you’ll hear all week.
